On May 26, 2002, 11 students from Atwater High School, Detroit Metropolitan Community Center, and Owens Valley High School arrived in Curry Village!

EXPEDITION V ran from May 26-31, 2002. Students stayed in Curry village for two nights before their 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip at Illilouette Creek. They hiked from Mono Meadow and followed the Panorama Trail out to Glacier Point, completing 11 miles in 3 days. During the trip they:

  • met new people from diverse backgrounds and different high schools
  • explored the hidden story of Sierra Nevada's Buffalo Soldiers with Interpretive Park Ranger Shelton Johnson
  • conducted stream macroinvertebrate and habitat surveys, providing data for the Resource Management Division of Yosemite National Park
  • collected hydrology data for the GLOBE program on the tributaries feeding into Illilouette Creek
  • learned how to backpack using Leave No Trace principles
